Young girls in middle school are often not taught how to properly take care of themselves or given the proper resources to do so. The healthy body programs that are in place within schools are more focused on diseases and less about proper hygiene and self care. Since many of the students are financially challenged they face the struggle of learning on their own due to overworked parents and not being able to buy the supplies they need. I have witnessed this first hand countless times and feel it’s time to do something.

She was upset. She was biting her lip and trying her best not to cry I asked her several times if she was ok. As the one tear dripped down her face she quickly wiped it away and whispered in my ear, “ Do you have a ...um...a pad?” I said sure, dug in my bag and handed her one. I later learned that because she didn't have any she had gone to the nurse who told her that there was a $1 charge. It didn’t seem much, but for her it was everything. No girl should have to face the humiliation of asking for feminine products and being rejected simply because they can not afford them!

Life locker aims to provide girls not just the products to take care of their period, but also the resources to build their self esteem in order to have a healthy body, mind and spirit.
